Retainer Instructions

How much do I wear my retainers?

Your retainer is to be worn 24 hours per day for the first six months, thereafter, it should be worn every night

Do I eat with my retainers in my mouth?

If your retainer has a wire you may eat with it in or take it out. If you take your retainers out you should put it into your retainer case.

Clear retainers should be removed when eating.

*After eating you should brush your retainers and brush your teeth. If you cannot brush your teeth immediately.

You should rinse your mouth and retainer with water.

How do I care for my retainer?

The retainer should be brushed at least two times per day with toothpaste.

Flipping retainers in your mouth or chewing your retainers will cause breakage or damage to the retainer.  Please keep it on your teeth.

Retainers will break or chip if they are dropped. If they are placed in a pocket you may sit on them and break them.

Be sure to keep your retainer in your case when it is not in your mouth.

A retainer that is wrapped in a napkin or tissue can easily make its way to the trash.  A case is rarely thrown away.

Pets like retainers. Be careful to keep your retainer away from animals.

Keep your retainer away from heat. The plastic can melt and distort if heated.

Lower bonded retainers hold your teeth in place. If a bond should become loose please call our office right away. Bonded retainers remain on the teeth unless you or your dentists requests their removal. If removed, a removable retainer should be made for an additional fee.

Your first set of retainers is paid for as part as your treatment fee. There are additional fees:

If a clear retainer is lost or broken, there is a fee is $125.00 – $150.00 dollars

If a retainer with a wire is lost or broken beyond repair, the replacement fee is $175.00 per retainer

If the lower bonded wire retainer comes off, there is a repair charge of $50.00 per tooth or $225.00 for a new replacement lower bonded wire.

Your retainer is a very important part of your orthodontic treatment. Teeth will shift rapidly if retainers are not worn. If you lose or break your retainer, please call our office right away. (231) 935-1440.
